This course is designed to give students a picture of both the slipperiness of second language acquisition (SLA) and the systematic storehouse of reliable knowledge that is now available to us. Seven chapters are highlighted: (1) language learning in childhood, (2) explaining second language learning, (3) individual differences in second language learning, (4) learner language, (5) observing learning and teaching in the second language classroom, (6) second language learning in the classroom, and (7) popular ideas about language learning revisited. In addition, 15 popular opinions about language learning and teaching (e.g., Languages are learned mainly through imitation. The best way to learn new vocabulary is through reading…etc.) will be explored throughout the whole course.
