The objective of this course is to help students familiarize themselves with the bilingual translation/interpretation from English to Chinese (and from Chinese to English for the mid-term and final projects), providing the foundation and guidance needed to study the skills required for a well-rounded background knowledge of screen and video programs translation/interpretation. Cultural and creative industry (henceforth CCI) will be introduced and included in this course. Basically, this is a project-based course, in which students in a group will have hands-on experience and practice in translation/interpretation and make a mid-term video project (using on campus facilities) and a final video project (off campus visit to factory/manufacturer/company) related to CCI in Taiwan using screen and video programs translation/interpretation skills and vocabulary items/phrases that students learn at the outset of the course. Simply put, CCI is at the core of this course, in which screen and video programs translation is one of the means to get to the end of CCI. We will bring this course in line with the corporate expectations and needs. Through this course, students will learn the skills in connection with creative thinking, problem solving, and project management (using PDCA model), which are highly required in the job market. Overall, this course aims to help students cultivate the following capabilities: 1) Linguistic Capability * to develop translation/interpretation capability by using words, phrases, and idiomatic expressions in a realistic context * to learn to translate/interpret the programs of screen and video into Chinese equivalents * to learn to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words and expressions from their context 2) Academic Capability * to learn and practice strategies and specific skills for effective translation/interpretation * to distinguish between objective observation and value judgment in the programs * to be able to express ideas clearly and back them up with specific details 3) Life Capability * to be familiar with the domain content, professional and effective application of English screen and video programs and become a better interdisciplinary translator/interpreter and communicator * to have some critical thinking about the programs * to understand the impact of the programs on one's life P.S. PDCA (plan–do–check–act) is an iterative four-step management process typically used in business.
